About Me
Welcome to my website! My name is Benjamin Humer, and I am an Engineering Science student specializing in Engineering Physics at the University of Toronto (UofT) where I am also enrolled in the Sustainable Energy Minor and Nuclear Engineering Certificate. The technical foundation in Engineering and Physics that I have gained at UofT has been invaluable for the experiences I’ve had in summer research assistantships as well as my 16-month co-op placement at General Fusion.
My primary interests are fusion energy and high performance computing; I am hoping to pursue a PhD that allows me to explore the interface of these two topics. At General Fusion I have had the opportunity to explore plasma phenomena in their Plasma Injector 3 experiment, as well as work on resistive MHD simulations on their high performance computing cluster. This experience has made me more excited to explore plasma phenomena - throuhgout my education and career.
One of the most important aspects of my of my UofT undergrad was my time competing on the Varsity Blues Rowing team. The lessons that I have learned from participating in high-level sport throughout my life have shaped how I approach working in a team setting. Sport has continuously taught me about how a team can become much more than the sum of its parts, and this is a mentality that I bring to all my work. I have also been recognized for my leadership and work ethic in all three seasons of Rowing at the University of Toronto; where I was Novice, Rookie, and Oarsman of the year in 2021, 2022, and 2023 respectively. These awards are not only a result of my achievements within the sport itself, but a result of the way I interact with my teammates and how I use my work ethic to lead by example; these are the qualities I hope to bring to teams that I am a part of academically and profesisonally.
